Kids (and adults) get so into this seemingly-simple game of creation and destruction that they chatter about it constantly, pulling everyone around them along with them into the world of Steve.<br />
<br />
My oldest son is in love with Minecraft and--since I could write a book on the game too now--I decided to throw him a DIY Minecraft 5th birthday party at my parents' house this past winter. My son and his friends, both boys and girls, had a really great time and most everything was handmade or printed out from online for free!<br />
<br />
The great thing about Minecraft party DIYing is that the primary colors (green, brown, black and blue) are easy to find at any party store or dollar store and the artwork is all squared (pixelated) and easy for even the worst artist to recreate. Here is the lowdown of our Minecraft birthday party, with links to printouts and more to make your party planning easy!<br />
<br />
<br />
<b><u>Decor:</u> </b><br />
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IhteYmNoa1Y/VXzMojs8zmI/AAAAAAAAAa4/JOVghbgN-Ck/s1600/10933976_10103612321300959_3616532951884800102_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IhteYmNoa1Y/VXzMojs8zmI/AAAAAAAAAa4/JOVghbgN-Ck/s320/10933976_10103612321300959_3616532951884800102_n.jpg" width="240" /></a>We started out our party decorations with green and black helium-filled balloons, green plastic tablecloths, square plates, and two shades of green crepe paper purchased from Party City (available at dollar stores as well.) I drew creeper faces on a few of the green balloons with a black sharpie. Simple and effective!<br />
<br />
I printed out a perfect and FREE Minecraft birthday banner, tented food cards, and Potion of Healing drink bottle wraps from Printabelle via CatchMyParty.com. I used twizzler bites for TNT, rolos for Gold, Hershey's Kisses for Diamonds, and Swedish Fish for, well, Fish! We also wrapped green Gatorade bottles with the Potion of Healing bottle wraps.<br />
<br />
<b>You can download all these free printable and more <a href="http://catchmyparty.com/printables/download/minecraft-party-collection#">HERE</a>. </b><br />
<br />
Finally, I splurged and ordered my son the letters of his name transformed into 8" Minecraft characters by Christine at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Wrap-It-Up/780019065358254?fref=ts">Wrap It Up</a>. These served as the dessert table centerpiece, but also as a gift for him that is now a decoration in his bedroom. The letters are amazing and were totally worth the $10 a letter.<br />
<br />
<b><u>Entertainment/Party Activities: </u></b><br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hVkSk49o1Vo/VXzMnTMNNNI/AAAAAAAAAag/u6nm12Xig0c/s1600/10801732_10103612321116329_755055107197899866_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="305" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hVkSk49o1Vo/VXzMnTMNNNI/AAAAAAAAAag/u6nm12Xig0c/s320/10801732_10103612321116329_755055107197899866_n.jpg" width="320" /></a>I found a perfect mom-approved Minecraft parody music video playlist on YouTube and beamed it wirelessly to my parents' TV from my iPad for the duration of the party. The kids were mesmerized by the videos and spent the beginning and end of the party alternating between free play with my sons' toys and having a Minecraft dance party.<br />
<br />
You can get the playlist <a href="https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLgrrWRBes1c6pnACEpQOFEQ8zXP-Os-Cb">HERE</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLtJ2sk922NkcS0qHQJipX42Lj3U8gP89S">HERE</a>.<br />
<br />
After we ate pizza (what else?), I had the kids decorate paper swords with adhesive back foam squares and stars from Oriental Trading. I doubled up the swords (glued and taped them together) to make them sturdier for the sword fighting that ensued. Both the boys and the girls loved this activity (and some of the parents participated too)!<br />
<br />
And, finally, I had the kids get out the rest of their energy with a Minecraft pinata. I made this myself out of green and black crepe paper, glue, and some ribbon. You can't tell from the photo, but it had a black crepe creeper face on the front! SO easy and SO cheap.<br />
<br />
<b><u>Cake:</u> </b><br />
<br />
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sreWzDcAJS4/VXzMo78tdII/AAAAAAAAAa0/QoZpOX05ZVI/s1600/10918999_10103600140326729_7577922913655385408_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sreWzDcAJS4/VXzMo78tdII/AAAAAAAAAa0/QoZpOX05ZVI/s320/10918999_10103600140326729_7577922913655385408_n.jpg" width="240" /></a>I made Steve and TNT fondant cupcake toppers with pre-made fondant purchased at AC Moore. I didn't get a good shot of all my hard work (ok, it wasn't that hard!) but all you have to do is cut out squares and rectangles. Its so simple and quick if you use boxed cake mix and premade frosting as well.<br />
<br />
<b><u>Favors:</u></b><br />
For favor bags, all you need is a green paper bag and a sharpie or some black construction paper to make creeper faces if you have the time. I stuck to plain green bags with the guests names on them and filled them with candy, novelty noise makers from Party City, and homemade Perler bead Minecraft keychains.<br />
<br />
These keychains are SO fun to make with your kids and you can find patterns online <a href="http://www.minieco.co.uk/minecraft-design-sheets-hama-beads-paper-mosaic/">HERE</a> or come up with your own designs. Perler beads and keychain findings are available at AC Moore or Amazon. You can also purchase them from my Etsy shop <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/LisaFie-Designs/503726639696684">HERE</a> if you are feeling DIY-ed out!<br />
<br />
<br />
For a party that was super simple, cheap, and enjoyable to throw together, you wouldn't believe how much fun the kids had! But, maybe, that is just the real underlying power of Minecraft; the power of going back to simplicity and letting kids use their imagination to dream up the fun.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sreWzDcAJS4/VXzMo78tdII/AAAAAAAAAa0/QoZpOX05ZVI/s1600/10918999_10103600140326729_7577922913655385408_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a></div>

How will I top this next year??<br />

I tend to retreat from my blog when things get difficult in my personal life because part of my healing process is (regretful) over sharing. This is why you may have noticed the many posting hiatuses over here at Rockland Mother over the past few years.<br />
<br />
So, here I am again after another hiatus and, forgive me as I'm going to forgive myself, but this is one thing I feel I need to over share: I am getting divorced.<br />
<br />
Ugh. Its really painful to write that for all the world to see. Though over half of marriages fail these days, we of course never imagine we'll find ourselves in this terrible predicament. We hear about celebrities getting married and divorced every day and it seems like cake; sign the paper, move on. But, really, it is so much more awful than that.<br />
<br />
First, you beat yourself up and second guess yourself about all the things that you may have done wrong or could have done differently. And, honestly, you'll beat yourself up about these things long after the papers are signed. Even if you've tried most everything to save your marriage, there'll be a little voice that says "If I had just done <i>everything </i>he/she had wanted, maybe we could have stayed together and been happy!" Man, that little voice is an asshole.<br />
<br />
Second, especially if you've been in a particularly tenuous situation for a long time, you may find yourself dealing with some anxious and/or sad emotions that truly and honestly suck. Some days you'll feel like you are ready to move on and take the bull by the horns. Other days, you'll try on your wedding rings or look through your wedding album and cry silently to yourself so that your kids don't hear. Each day is a surprise party of emotions that you may or may not welcome. Surprise! Your future will not turn out as planned! People around you will tell you to "get over yourself" or "just deal with it," and you won't be able to make them understand what it feels like to be just one when you were two.<br />
<br />
If you have kids, be prepared for you heart to be torn into shreds on many different occasions. You will worry about them when they are not with you. You will worry about them when they are with you but are missing the other parent. You will worry about what their future will look like as children of divorced parents (i.e. you will have nightmares of them ending up in prison.) You will find yourself overcompensating for the parent who can not or does not want to be there.<br />
<br />
Your children may say things to you like "I wish mommy and daddy and my brother and me could be all together." And, even though you know that that scenario wouldn't be in anybody's best interest, you can feel your resolve slipping away. You'll want to run to the courthouse and rip up the papers. "Stop this ride! I want to get off!"<br />
<br />
You'll look at the person you probably still love and you may try to be as nice as possible, but divorce brings out the ugly in people. You'll only be hurt again and again if you expect kindness to always come your way.<br />
<br />
Oh, and if you're Catholic like me, you'll worry about your immortal soul.<br />
<br />
Its sounds horrible, right? Well, its all this and maybe some more. BUT, I take heart from so many people who have survived this. They may be changed, but they still go on and, at this point, moving forward is the only way to go. I will let the little moments of happy sustain me until there's only mostly blue skies ahead. I will savor every little kiss and "I love you. I always want to be with you." from my little boys. I will sing when I like and I will try to remember that the Earth continues to spin.<br />
<br />
Thank you for listening and, if you have been or are in the same spot, please know you are not alone. A little over sharing can sometimes make us feel better. I know I do now. xo<br />

Sometimes it lifts your spirits and helps you get through a rough spot in your life. <b><a href="http://bethkendrick.com/portfolio/cure-common-breakup-3/">THE CURE FOR THE COMMON BREAKUP</a></b> by Beth Kendrick is one of those books--and its not just because the novel starts with a recipe for a cocktail (although, that does certainly help!)<br />

Summer Benson is a flight attendant whose life literally crashes and burns when her almost-fiance breaks up with her immediately following a near-fatal emergency landing (not cool.) With bruised bones and shattered dreams, she heads off to the only place she's hears can numb the pain--a tiny little seaside town in Delaware known for healing broken hearts. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And Black Dog Bay really is just what the doctor ordered. The locals know exactly how to help the broken-hearted go through the stages of breakup grief and emerge victorious. Heck, there's even a clothing boutique with outfits arranged in healing stages (start with mumus; end with mini skirts.) And with Summer making friends with the hilarious locals, pursuing the hot mayor, and even tangling with the oldest and wealthiest town curmudgeon, it seems possible that her old wounds may heal and the future won't be so painful after all. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
THE CURE FOR THE COMMON BREAKUP just made me happy and hopeful. Kendrick's writing is fast and witty and she makes everything fall into place as it should--and sometimes you just need that in a book. The novel really is as delicious as the ice cream on the cover, even though maybe it should have been a colorful cocktail on the cover instead! </div>

Do not let the demure painting on the cover fool you--Kelly O'Connor McNees' <a href="http://kellyoconnormcnees.com/books/the-island-of-doves"><b>THE ISLAND OF DOVES</b></a> packs quite a punch! I absolutely LOVE this novel. It is one of those rare books that can't put down and whose ending leaves you in pain pining for more.<br>
<br>
THE ISLAND OF DOVES is set in 19th Century America, when the grand houses of the wealthy, newly-established Americans stood in a fascinating but fading co-existence with the camps of the Native American peoples. Susannah Fraser belongs to the first group, living in one of Buffalo's stateliest mansions amongst her fine china, jewels, servants, and a husband who spares her no love or kindness.<br>
<br>
Following a particularly violent encounter with her husband, a Catholic sister offers Susannah a means of escape. She boards a steamboat across lake Huron toward Mackinac island and toward Magdaleine Fonteneau, a woman hell-bent on securing Susannah's freedom for her own reasons.<br>
<br>
Magdaleine is a truly compelling character and based loosely on one of the most successful fur-traders in the Northwest Territory--<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magdelaine_Laframboise">Magdaleine Laframboise</a>. McNees' Magdaleine is a wealthy fur trader too, widowed while pregnant with her first child and forced to take the reigns of her late husband's business. She is of direct French and Native American descent, like most of Mackinac's inhabitants, and she can row a boat or tap a tree as well as any man. She also volunteers her time selflessly to teach local girls how to read the catechism. But she struggles with showing any love or maternal instinct toward her now-adult son, and also coming to terms with the tragic death of her two sisters.<br>
<br>
These two women--vastly unalike--manage to save each other. They weather many storms, including the possibility that Susannah's husband is on the hunt for her, not always with grace, but with a hearty tenacity that is the hallmark of pioneer women. I found this inspiring! By no means do men play second fiddle, but it is clear that the women in THE ISLAND OF DOVES can take care of themselves and each other.<br>
<br>
This expertly-realized pioneer spirit, along with the most natural of dialogue (a difficult task for any author) and a plot that moves at a perfectly addicting pace, makes THE ISLAND OF DOVES a must-read in my book. I truly hope that Kelly O'Connor McNees will be writing a sequel so that we can all find out more of what happens to Susannah, Magdaleine and the crew. In the meanwhile, I've been inspired to do a bit of historical research into this era in American history--thanks for the inspiration, Kelly! <br>

<span id="goog_308023689"></span>This weekend I got to meet Eva, the owner of Bella Sophia Sugar Crafts in West Haverstraw, NY. Besides being drawn over to her vendor booth by her wonderful personality, her table was filled with the cutest little treats! She had rice crispy treats on a stick, pie pops, and a beautiful fondant-covered cake. But I was drawn most in by her awesome assortment of cakes in a jar. Cakes in a jar!! Can you just imagine the party favor possibilities?<br />
<br />
Eva makes these cakes in a jar in so many delicious cake and frosting flavors I can't even recite them to you, but think along the lines of red velvet, mocha, coconut mandarin chardonnay (yum.) Check out her website for a full menu and pricing: <a href="http://bellasophiasugarcrafts.blogspot.com/">http://bellasophiasugarcrafts.blogspot.com/</a>.<br />

Eva so generously gifted me with a red velvet cake in a jar with buttercream frosting and it was great! While I would order cream cheese frosting with my red velvet cakes (which Bella Sophia Sugar Crafts can certainly provide), I thought the red velvet cake itself was super delicious. And I can just imagine rows of these little cakes in jars set out on a table at a party as favors or as part of a dessert bar.<br />

That's exactly what these refrigerator build-a-robot magnets are. I got the instructions to make these magnets from my super-talented friend and best-aunt-ever Kate over at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/KatyKakess">Katy Kakes</a>. Pick up the supplies next time you're at the craft store and save this activity for a rainy/snowy day!<br />

<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-HOnJKbR8diI/UxksM0kPD7I/AAAAAAAAAYI/608G2D8jHPk/s640/blogger-image--1482307987.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-HOnJKbR8diI/UxksM0kPD7I/AAAAAAAAAYI/608G2D8jHPk/s320/blogger-image--1482307987.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Adhesive Backed Foam Sheets (we got the sparkly kind)</div>
<div>
Adhesive Backed Foam Shapes (optional) </div>
<div>
Adhesive Backed Magnets</div>
<div>
Thin Cardboard or Sturdy Cardstock </div>
<div>
Scissors</div>
<div>
Glue (optional) </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1) Cut the adhesive back foamed sheets into shapes to be used as part of the robots' bodies. Big squares and rectangles can be used as robot torsos; long rectangles can be arms and legs; semi-circles and squares can be heads, etc.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
2) Remove the adhesive backing from the foam shapes and attach to your cardboard or cardstock. Use your scissors (an exacto-knife would work too) to trim the sturdy backing to the foam shapes.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
3) Remove the adhesive backing from your magnets and attach to the back (cardboard/cardstock) of your robot parts. You will want to trim your magnets down into small squares if you bought them in large sheets.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
4) Decorate your robot parts with additional foam shapes to make faces, buttons, etc. If you don't have pre-cut foam shapes, you can cut out your own from your foam sheets. You may also want to dab some glue onto the backs of your accesso1ry shapes as the adhesive foam seems to lose its stickiness after a while when attached to other foam pieces.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
5) Play with your build-a-robot magnets on a refrigerator or metal cookie sheet!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
----</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-IP6_aaRJaBo/UxksMPXeaYI/AAAAAAAAAYA/lYhOyYntuIM/s640/blogger-image-1411887367.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-IP6_aaRJaBo/UxksMPXeaYI/AAAAAAAAAYA/lYhOyYntuIM/s320/blogger-image-1411887367.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
And that's it, folks! I cut out all the shapes, since my oldest is only four, but both of my boys had a ball sticking the foam to the cardboard for me and decorating the robots. Andrew even came up with his own designs to make the robots look like Transformers (I was impressed!) </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You can also cut out any other shapes that you want. Dolls with interchangeable dresses, cars, geometric shapes, etc. There really isn't a limit to how creative you can get with this craft, and best of all its simple while still being a lot of fun. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Enjoy!</div>

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7P445fbLvIU/UuauQLhYXMI/AAAAAAAAAXg/3LR36byQckU/s1600/Twisted+Sisters.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7P445fbLvIU/UuauQLhYXMI/AAAAAAAAAXg/3LR36byQckU/s1600/Twisted+Sisters.JPG" height="320" width="212" /></a></div>
<i>New York Times </i>bestseller Jen Lancaster has been on my radar for ages, having made a critically-acclaimed transition from writing hilarious memoirs (<i>Bright Lights, Big Ass; Bitter is the New Black; Such a Pretty Fat</i>) to writing hilarious novels (<i>If You Were Here</i>; <i>Here I Go Again.) </i>Yet, surprisingly, her newest novel, released on Tuesday, is the first I've read!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I am so glad, though, that <b><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Twisted-Sisters-Jen-Lancaster-ebook/dp/B00DMCJR8O/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1391744066&sr=1-1&keywords=twisted+sisters">TWISTED SISTERS</a></b> (Berkley Hardcover; February 2014) has finally introduced me to the self-proclaimed governor of "Jennsylvania." This novel is quick-witted and sarcastic, yet ultimately full of whimsy and heart--and I can see now why Lancaster has such a loyal following. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
----</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>TWISTER SISTERS </b>stars Reagan, an over-achieving, over-exercising, over-critical middle sister from a working class Chicagoan family. Reagan believes she has risen far above her upbringing, having landed a job as a television psychologist on a successful cable makeover show. And she can't help but constantly criticize her two sisters' less-than-glamorous lives and wider waistlines. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
However, when Reagan's television program is bought by a big network, and she's forced to up the ante at work or face being fired, the judgmental sister begins her slow, painful decent from her high horse. Forced to resort to the highly unethical and supernatural art of body-swapping (yes, body-swapping) to save her job, she begins to see that she is really the unhealthy and unhappy one. But it may just be too late for her to save her reputation, her job, and, most importantly, her relationship with her sisters.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
----</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As I began this book, I had a bit of a struggle looking past Reagan's bad attitude. Bluntly, she is a bitch and she constantly, cruelly insults her sisters' appearances and their lives. I wondered "will I care enough about this protagonist to keep on reading?" Yet, impressively, Lancaster has written Reagan in such a way that while. you hate her, you DO want to keep reading--if only to see if there is any hope of her being redeemed. I actually cared about seeing her learn the error of her ways. And, when she of course does, its in a really great way.<br />
<br />
Bitchiness and harsh body-weight jokes excluded, there are lots of laugh-out-loud moments in this book. Lancaster is known for this, and for tying her hilarious comments in with current events and celebrities, and it made for a really fun read. I especially loved the characters that were based on celebrities, including Reagan's first boss who is Oprah-esque and her TV patient who is a dead-ringer for Amanda Bynes (poor, crazy girl.) </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now, the body-swapping plot might seem like its kind of out of left field, but not much time is spent on it, really, and Lancaster makes it work. Plus, she ties the book up in such a warm and fuzzy, yet unexpected and non-cheesey way, that all the pieces fit perfectly. I finished this book with a smile on my face, and that's a win in my book. </div>
<div>

</tbody></table>
I really enjoyed Laura Spinella's <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Perfect-Timing-Laura-Spinella/dp/042526730X/ref=la_B003VKWXII_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1367523600&sr=1-2">PERFECT TIMING</a> (Berkley; November 2013). Spinella's second novel not only often made me giddy like a teenager-in-love, but it also kept me engaged with a plot chock-full of lovable characters and an excellent social statement to boot.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<i>Isabel moves to Alabama from New Jersey following her parents' divorce. Her solace in the midst of this turmoil is a local boy named Aidan, who grows into an amazing singer-songwriter and, eventually, Isabel's crush. She doesn't realize the strength of her feelings, however, until Aidan is accused of a violent crime which forces them both to flee to Las Vegas. It is there that events are put into play that will change their lives forever--and tear them apart. </i></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
<i>Seven years later, Aiden has become an enormous rock star and Isabel has a serious boyfriend and a comfortable job at a New England radio station.. Aidan and Isabel have not spoken since they parted ways in Vegas; that is, until a change in the station's ownership has Isabel scrambling for a concert headliner. The only way to save the station is for Isabel to reach out to Aidan, but will the unfinished business in their past get in the way of the task at hand?</i></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Welll, of course it does, but I won't give it away! What I will say is that Spinella has a talent for writing romantic scenes that evoke those "squee!" moments --and it's oh so much fun to read.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But this book isn't a romance novel--it's fiction--and the bulk of the novel is outside of the love scenes and is very engaging as well. The flashbacks to Aidan and Isabel's teenage years are coming-of-age great and Aidan's evil music agent is so fun to hate. I also can't tell you how much I enjoyed how Spinella wrote the relationship between Isabel's father and his husband, Patrick. It was a tender view into the lives of two soulmates--and I think the utter normality of it was truly a beautiful thing to read. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My only tiny critiques? I got tired of all of the characters using the full name of the radio station when talking. It is a mouthful and people just don't talk like that. Also, one of the most anticipated love scenes is interrupted by a conversation about birth control! Is it a realistic conversation? Sure. But don't halt a big moment like that with a discussion about mechanics, please? </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Regardless of my nitpicking (sorry Laura!), I encourage you to go pick up a copy of PERFECT TIMING. It's a really great read from an author with a really promising future. Happy reading (and squee-ing!) <br />
<br />

I like to think of myself as a cool mom for a boy to have. I have two brothers myself, so I grew up with an appreciation of boys' toys; especially those of the 80s and 90s. My Barbie didn't have a horse--she rode on He-Man's panther! And I still remember all the Ninja Turtles' names and the weapons they carried.<br />
<br />
So, I was really happy when Andrew developed a love for Transformers Rescue Bots when it debuted on the Hub almost two years ago. Its a preschooler-friendly version of the beloved Transformers franchise, and it of course has cool toys to go along with it from <a href="http://www.hasbro.com/playskool/en_US/playskoolheroes/transformers/">Playskool</a>.<br />

They were produced from an earlier concept and the colors and human companions with each bot were not always correct. Of course, it was only my geeky self that cared about this. My 2.5 year-old loved them and I owe a lot to the early rescue bot toys for occupying him right after my second son was born.<br />
<br />
So what's so cool about these Rescue Bots, aside from the fact that the cartoon they are based on is light on violence? Well... <b>THEY TRANSFORM IN ONE EASY STEP. </b>I emphasize this with such gusto because any parent with transformers-obsessed children can attest to the tears and frustration that come along with trying to transform the toys geared toward older children -- and I'm talking about the parents! No more tears, folks. <b>These toys are perfect for the recommended 3-6 year-old age group, and I venture to say that younger kids will love them too</b> (my 20-month-old plays right along with his big brother.) <br />
<br />
In vehicle mode, all the Rescue Bots have working wheels and Blades the helicopter has a working rotor, but there's really not any articulation to the head, arms, and legs of the toys in bot mode. I really don't view this as a negative as extra articulation would have mean extra transformation steps--and my kids are more interested in wheeling the cars around and transforming them back and forth thank gesturing with their arms.<br />
<br />
We still play with these toys and their <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Transformers-Rescue-Playskool-Heroes-Station/dp/B0015R6UXI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1389329152&sr=8-1&keywords=rescue+bot+fire+station">accompanying fire</a> station on a regular basis. And, after being everywhere from in the pool to in the sand, they are still in pretty good condition. Sure, we've got some rust and paint melting on the toys that got wet (lesson: don't get them wet), and Optimus Prime lost one of his wheels in an stomping accident, but I'm pleased these plastic toys have held up for two years in the hands of two terrors.<br />

We bought the first edition Rescue Bot toys for about $12.99 each through Amazon.com. Each of the eight first edition toys (Chase, Heatwave, Blades, Boulder, Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, Hoist and Medix) are still available online, but you may pay a pretty penny for one that's in short supply. <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Transformers-Rescue-Playskool-Heroes-Doc-Bot/dp/B006IMX18W/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1389300534&sr=8-12&keywords=rescue+bots">Medix, for example, is $60</a> on Amazon!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Blades Energize</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
There is, however, a second generation of toys called Transformers Rescue Bots Energize that you can buy for anywhere from $11 to $18 in stores and online. These toys are equally as easy to transform and feature blue "energize" details and weapons. Your kids will love them and you should get them--but if you're a bit of a geeky mom like me, you might want to keep your eye out for price-decreases on the originals so you can have them in your collection too.<br />
<br />
Rescue Bots, roll out!

When we lived in Queens, we were spoiled by all the great restaurants of many different cultures within walking or subway distance. German, Italian, Greek, Polish, Lebanese, Portuguese--you name it, we ate it! Now that we're in Rockland, my husband makes it a point to find Rockland's own exotic fare, places that never existed or I never knew existed when I was growing up here.<br />
<br />
Now, a Kosher deli is neither new or exotic, but I never even had a pastrami sandwich until I was out of college! The first time I ate at Katz' in New York and later Ben's in Queens, I was pretty blown away by what I was missing. I never even considered I could find a Kosher deli of that caliber in Rockland, but <a href="http://www.newcitykosher.com/">New City Kosher Deli & Restaurant</a> is just that. (A big thank you to the tracking device for good food in Matt's stomach!) <br />
<br />
I was pleasantly surprised when the restaurant owner chatted with us when we walked in and how we were served complimentary pickles and delicious, subtly spicy coleslaw when we were seated (who offers free stuff anymore?) The service was quick and friendly, and our meal was so yummy.<br />
<br />
We started off with three giant, crispy-sinful potato pancakes with applesauce. Matt had a pastrami and corned beef sandwich combo with Russian dressing on rye ($12.75), and I chose a New City Twin: one soft dinner roll with pastrami and another with corned beef, served with potato salad ($12.50). The meats were just delicious. The pastrami, particularly, was thin and melt-in-your-mouth good. Combined with the soft dinner roll, I really think it was the best pastrami sandwich I've ever eaten! And, I liked the subtly flavored potato salad too--and this Italian girl generally does not eat potato salad with mayonnaise.<br />
<br />
Our bill came to about $45 dollars with sodas, appetizers and sandwiches, so this is no $5 footlong type of place, but you are getting real quality for your dollar at New City Kosher Deli. So, go on and head over for a taste of your own. And, while you're at it, get some takeout for me! <br />

What would be more fun than your little one being at the helm of his/her own rock band? Being at the helm of an alien rock band, of course! <a href="http://creativitymobile.com/roklienz/"><b>Roklienz: Rok Out!</b> </a>is another great app from Creativity Inc. (makers of <a href="http://www.rocklandmother.com/2013/06/review-do-re-mi-123-music-for-kids-app.html">Do-Re-Mi 123</a>) that allows children to explore their musical creativity while involving the entire family.<br />
<br />
We really like playing this game and, for us, it's definitely a team effort! I get us started by picking the song and the alien band members, and I also dress the band up n the wardrobe room with Andrew's assistance ("Pick the<i> other</i> alien pirate eyepatch, Mommy!") <br />
<br />
Then, the rock begins. We select a stage and Andrew taps on each alien to get them playing their instrument or singing. He has a blast starting and stopping each one or selecting which alien to be a featured soloist. Andrew is almost three and a half, and with my guidance, he got the hang of the game quickly--though he does get frustrated if I'm not there to help him navigate between songs and stages. Older kids will be more adept at this and really into dressing their our rock band, taking and sharing band photos, recording their music video, and playing them back for family and friends.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yiNBx1Lj0UE/Ucz-Ijm64JI/AAAAAAAAAV4/iHKlsQimJNo/s320/Roklienz+Screen+Shot+2+-+Copy.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yiNBx1Lj0UE/Ucz-Ijm64JI/AAAAAAAAAV4/iHKlsQimJNo/s320/Roklienz+Screen+Shot+2+-+Copy.png" /></a>And what was little Liam's role in all this? Well, he just dances around the room! The four featured songs are really quirky and catchy--just what you would imagine alien rock to sound like--and they get us all dancing along.<br />
<br />
The game is free to play and available at the <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/roklienz-rok-out-concert!/id556727768">itunes app store</a> for download. There are in-app upgrades available for purchase (four extra aliens for 99 cents a piece or $2.99 for all), but we've been just fine with the original four aliens.<br />
<br />
We're looking forward to the next game in the Roklienz series, Roklienz: On Tour due out next week! It a rhythm-based game, so it will delve into a whole different aspect of music than our other Creativity Inc. apps. Look out for it in the itunes app store this July.<br />

All the apps from <a href="http://www.creativityusa.com/">Creativity Inc</a>. fall into that category! My 3-year-old, one-year-old, and I have been playing their gorgeous music-learning app <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/doremi-1-2-3-music-for-kids/id479692413?mt=8">DoReMi 1-2-3: Music For Kids</a> (and also their alien rock band music game Roklienz<span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 20px; text-align: center;">™ </span>Rok Out) on both my iPad and iPhone, and they are so much fun--for the entire family!<br />
<br />
There is so much to do and learn on DoReMi 1-2-3! Lesson mode teaches kids to play simple songs by ear using an eight note scale. Notes are represented not by piano keys, but by a set of 8 colorful characters all in a row (8 pandas, 8 stars, 8 cows, etc.) And songs are taught in a progressive, build-on fashion that really works with little ones.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zcAEs_T6ORI/UbtXod5d7CI/AAAAAAAAAU0/V5QigKkWhn4/s1600/Do+Re+Mi+Screen+Shot.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zcAEs_T6ORI/UbtXod5d7CI/AAAAAAAAAU0/V5QigKkWhn4/s200/Do+Re+Mi+Screen+Shot.png" width="200" /></a>In free play mode--the mode we use the most--kids can make and record their own music. In addition to being able to select from multiple sets of musical characters and wonderfully-illustrated backgrounds to make music in (our favorite setting is the farm), kids can also choose to hear their characters make animal sounds, sing do-re-mi, or recite colors or numbers as they play along the scale. <br />
<br />
Plus, there are tons of adorable extras added into each background. For example, clicking certain spots around the farm background will make corn grow from the field or a pig emerge from the barn. This game is no one-trick pony! You and your kids are going to have tons of fun discovering all of its little secrets! <br />
<br />
You can get a free version of DoReMi 1-2-3 lite, which includes a limited number of songs, backgrounds and characters, by visiting the itunes <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/doremi-1-2-3-music-for-kids/id479692413?mt=8">App Store</a>. A full version of the game with all the bells and whistles is available for <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/doremi-1-2-3-music-for-kids/id479692413?mt=8">purchase for $2.99</a>--totally worth it for all the family fun to be had in this beautifully-crafted kids app. <br />
<br />

Boy was I wrong! Andrew had a great time and it is all due to Wendy and her super fun teaching style.<br />
<br />
During our yoga session at the Rose Memorial Public Library, Wendy based the class around an adorable picture book about feelings. She began the class by asking the kids to draw a picture of how they were feeling that day, and everyone then spoke a bit about their drawing. Next, she read a few pages from the book and followed that with a couple minutes of yoga, repeating the cycle (read, yoga, read, yoga) for the rest of the class.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ggiSMMv2JeA/UXGtdjN4_SI/AAAAAAAAATQ/Sd9wRxpMqdI/s640/blogger-image-300710614.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ggiSMMv2JeA/UXGtdjN4_SI/AAAAAAAAATQ/Sd9wRxpMqdI/s200/blogger-image-300710614.jpg" width="150" /></a>The kids, ranging in age from about six to three, were captivated by Wendy's animated storytelling and did such a good job keeping up with the kid-friendly yoga moves. And, while Andrew especially kept wanting to interrupt the class with stories about robots, Wendy was so amazing at bringing each interruption kindly and quickly back into the yoga routine. We can thank her years as a preschool teacher for that useful skill!<br />
<br />
It was so nice to see Andrew being active in such a healthy and quieter way, and I am definitely going to be joining Wendy for more classes in the future. You can check out the <a href="http://littleshantiyoga.vpweb.com/">Little Shanti website</a> or <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Little-Shanti-Yoga-Studio/182606718467764">Facebook page</a> for more class times, locations and pricing info. Wendy teaches from her home close to Suffern, travels to local schools and other venues, and also does private classes and birthday parties for kids and adults, so there are so many, many fun ways your family can get started!<br />

So, last year I went on a hunt for a portable bath tub. An inflatable tub worked at first, but was soon too small, losing air, annoying to store and easily slimed up. Yuck! There had to be a better solution.<br />

So flat that when held closed with its attached clip you can store it in your luggage when you travel. <br />
<br />
When opened, however, this transformer of a tub transforms into a bath big enough for children up to 4 years old. I've actually managed to squeeze both my tall kids (3 and 10 months) into one, though it may not be the most comfortable thing. Fun, though! <br />
<br />
The Flexibath is bpa, phthalate, lead and PVC free, has a non-slip bottom and underside, and comes in green, blue, pink, red, white or clear. You can even buy an infant insert to use with smaller babies (though I haven't a tried it and used a molded tub instead.)<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Broken!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
My only gripe: after almost a year of use and not much folding, the folding clip broke off the tub leaving a jagged edge that could have cut someone. I immediately contacted Prince Lionheart via their <a href="http://www.princelionheart.com/site/contactus.html">website</a> and they sent me a replacement bath, but I really hope the company comes up with a better clip mechanism for the future.<br />
<br />
Until then, I still wholeheartedly recommend the Flexibath to anyone who has just a shower stall or needs to travel, but recommend you check for clip breakage before each bath. Just be sure to hold on to your receipt too, so that you can request a new tub if needed.<br />

America had virtually no navy, but she had hundreds of miles of coast and some of the hardiest seamen in the world. Eight hundred American privateers took six hundred British prizes during the war, crippling enemy shipping and creating vast private fortunes. But the stakes were even higher on sea than on land. Because Britain refused to recognize American privateers as enemy combatants, privateers unlucky enough to be captured by British crews could be hanged as pirates.</div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in; orphans: 0; widows: 0;"><br />

</div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">I was particularly interested in the occupation of 1777, because the officers on Howe’s staff attempted to recreate decadent Georgian London in conservative Quaker Philadelphia. It was a clash of cultures from the start. </div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">In London, this was the era of the Hellfire Club (which Franklin attended) and public figures such as John Montagu, the First Lord of the Admiralty, who AES had as many as nine children with his opera-singer mistress. Sex and the Georgian theater went hand in hand. Wealthy men chose their mistresses from its stages, and those with less coin from the streets outside. </div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">London had DruryLane, Covent Garden, and the Haymarket. Philadelphia had only theSouthwark Theater, built in 1766 and closed repeatedly by the cityfathers for immorality. (As a side note, John Andre did indeed designa backdrop at the Southwark that remained in use well into the 19thcentury.)</div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">The <i>Mischianza</i>,or little bit of everything, was the crowning event of that glittering winter, but it owed more to the baroque extravaganzas of Christopher Wren and Inigo Jones than to the Grand Medley traditionof the English stage. The event, with its river flotilla and grand processional, bore Captain Andre’s stamp from concept to execution.And Peggy Shippen’s father did, in fact, withdraw his consent for her participation at the last moment.</div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;"><b><i>4. Before reading</i>The Turncoat<i>, I knew nothing about John Andre, or even thatthe British had a spymaster. Can you tell us more about him?</i></b></div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">A talented artist, acharming conversationalist, and very much a self-made man, Andre diedin Tappan, New York, as much mourned by the Americans who hanged himas the British he spied for. </div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">His relationship with the Cope family was as set forth in the book: they sheltered him during his captivity in Lancaster. He discovered a talent for drawing in their son, Caleb. After Andre was released to New York, he wrote to the Copes, asking them to send Caleb to him as a drawing pupil,and went so far as to offer to pay all of his expenses. The Cope family refused, but young Caleb made at least one attempt to run away to join Andre. Speculation about Andre’s sexuality has only arisen in the last forty years. </div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;"><i><b>5. Your novel made me feel acutely the high stakes and grave consequences for the men and women who fought on the rebel side, while for the British soldiers it was business as usual. How do you think that uneven commitment affected the war? </b></i></div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">For officers like Howe and Tremayne, it <i>was</i> “business as usual” – and a distasteful one at that. The rebels were more dedicated, often desperate. Franklin said it best: We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.</div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;"></div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;"><i></i><br />
<i></i><i><b>6. What do you see happening to Kate and Peter after the story ends? Do they live happily ever after?</b></i></div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">Kate and Tremayne not only live happily ever, but they go on to foil an assassination attempt against Franklin in Paris. When I have time to write that, of course!</div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;"><i><b>7. Were there really female agents working for George Washington during the American Revolution? What do we know about them? </b></i></div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">There were female agents recorded in the pay books of both Howe and Washington,although neither Lydia Darragh nor the Widow of Mount Holly appear in them. There is no evidence to suggest that Elizabeth Loring and her husband were anything but what they seemed—avaricious Loyalists—but the affair was widely believed to contribute to Howe’s failure to prosecute the war more efficiently that winter. </div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">Eighteenth century spies communicated in writing using ciphers, masks, and invisible inks. They concealed messages inside the heads of buttons, rolled in writing quills, and sewn into the linings of clothing. Andre was captured with the plans for West Point stuffed in his boot.<br />

One of the reviews for this debut novel calls it a "stay-up-all-night, swashbuckling, breath-holding adventure of a novel*," and I am in complete agreement. <a href="http://www.donnathorland.com/">Donna Thorland</a>'s <b><a href="http://www.amazon.com/The-Turncoat-Revolution-Donna-Thorland/dp/0451415396/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1362926065&sr=8-1&keywords=the+turncoat">THE TURNCOAT</a></b> had me staying up way past my bedtime...and I'm a woman in much need of sleep! <br />
<br />
I was quickly hooked, though, on this historical novel about a Quaker woman who becomes a spy against the British in Philadelphia during the Revolutionary War. It's a steamy romance, nail-biting spy/war novel and American-history lesson mixed into one; a guilty pleasure of a novel that one doesn't have to feel too guilty about reading! <br />
<br />
Kate Grey is a rare breed of Quaker. She has been raised by a man who is far from a pacifist--in fact, he has rebel-leanings and (secret) ties to George Washington. So, when British officer Peter Tremayne commandeers her home, Kate is not afraid to voice her dislike of his politics or his position. And soon she becomes unafraid of his amorous advances as well! <br />
<br />
But, alas, their time together is cut short. A rebel spy hatches a plot to take Tremayne out of the picture, and this so-called Merry Widow implicates Kate in the process. <br />
<br />
With Tremayne gone, Kate sees no other path but to follow the Merry Widow to Philadelphia and train as a rebel spy under her tutelage. But all is not fair in love and war. When Tremayne shows up in Philadelphia and recognizes Kate for whom she really is--and discovers that Kate is also engaged to his high-ranking cousin--they'll need to decide where their loyalties lay: to their countries or to each other. <br />
<br />
Ooooo, did you like my dramatic synopsis (it was fun to write, I admit.) Seriously, though, this book is a great read and extremely well-crafted. I loved Kate Grey as a main character. She's smart and sassy, but still gets nervous and makes mistakes, and I find that makes her much more relatable than an over-perfect heroine. <br />
<br />
The book is also very well-researched and I found the American history fascinating. I also have a soft-spot for brotherhood-at-war stories (All Quiet on the Western Front is a favorite) and this has a satisfying amount of that too. <br />
<br />
Then there's the excitement of the battle scenes and the intrigue of the espionage (with elaborate costumes!) that kept me turning the pages. And of course, we cant forget the steamy romance seems that sometimes made me blush, but which I definitely did like. Though, I'd rather be told that a man was aroused than that "his c*ck stirred." But maybe that's a historical turn of phrase... or I'm a big prude!!<br />
<br />
I'm really looking forward to the next book in Thorland's Renegades of the Revolution series. Until then, you should check out THE TURNCOAT so we can discuss--I will actually have the author herself by for a blog tour stop and a book giveaway on March 13th! Make sure you stop back then!<br />

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-juWtWD-UhYM/UT39UaHCZ4I/AAAAAAAAASA/ByZB0cErIoI/s1600/Andrew+in+Birthday+Throne.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-juWtWD-UhYM/UT39UaHCZ4I/AAAAAAAAASA/ByZB0cErIoI/s320/Andrew+in+Birthday+Throne.jpg" height="320" width="238" /></a></div>
I totally dropped the ball on planning Andrew's birthday party early this year. Last year we booked the now-closed Playroom in Nyack months in advance, but this year I found myself three weeks out with no such plans and no energy to pull something together in our small apartment.<br />
<br />
Then I remembered the pirate party Andrew's cousin had at the (since-closed) Kids Kingdom location in Pomona last year. The Nanuet location is still open, so I crossed my fingers and gave them a call--and was able to book a party on my desired date in no time flat. <br />
<br />
The party was really nice! While I was initially disappointed we couldn't book in Pomona, the <a href="http://www.kidskingdomrockland.com/">Nanuet Kids Kingdom</a> is actually really great. It's much bigger, allowing for a bouncy castle, a play grocery store, an obstacle course, and a wooden climb-on pirate ship all under one roof. And you get the venue all to yourself for your allotted party time. The front door is locked once your party starts, so you can be sure your kids and all your gear are safe inside. I'm a big fan if that!<br />
<br />
The venue play area is really clean and the apparatuses are fun and in good shape, despite the location also being used during the week as a preschool. Well, ok, you could tell the grocery store items have been well-loved (and were once once real grocery store boxes--smart cost saver!) but the kids could really have cared less and spent a lot of time playing there. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-urDnKTLCGKg/UT39Uf_LIRI/AAAAAAAAASE/UGPFFaRXzCY/s1600/Andrews's+Birthday.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-urDnKTLCGKg/UT39Uf_LIRI/AAAAAAAAASE/UGPFFaRXzCY/s320/Andrews's+Birthday.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a>We had two lovely young party hosts for the hour and a half party, and after a good period of free play, they led the kids in some pirate party games (a treasure hunt, pin the x on the map, walking the plank, etc.) My son got a real kick out of the role playing ("Agh, there's a shark!") and also sitting in the birthday throne chair for pizza and cupcakes. <br />
<br />
The only thing that pained me a bit about the party was something unavoidable--the price tag! A pirate party at Kids Kingdom costs $325 for 10 children (infants and birthday child are free) which includes pizza and juice for the kids, paper goods, party hosts, and party favors (a pirate cup, coins and a tattoo for boys and play jewelry for the girls.) Additional kids are $15 and food and drink for parents and extra party time costs extra. You also have to bring your own cake. <br />
<br />
I of course understand why the party costs so much and don't fault Kids Kingdom. When you're running a big facility like that, there are big bills to pay! And, while my wallet hurt a bit, the stress I saved this year really was worth the cost. Winter birthdays require indoor parties, and it can be tough to do the planning for that when you've got high-maintenance little ones. <br />
<br />
So, I definitely recommend you check out Kids Kingdom in Nanuet for birthday parties! They also offer royal parties and princess tea parties (fun, fun, fun!)<br />

I hope you like it and I hope the new layout makes it easier for folks to track down specific reviews. Please don't hesitate to comment if you don't think I've succeeded at this at all, though!<br />

I hope you are all well and I look forward to getting in the swing of posting regularly again. My two little guys give me permission now to step away from the playroom for a few minutes or so, so you'll be hearing a lot more from me soon. :) Lisa at Rockland Motherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11184108376837819012noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5943445384848979103.post-838803177246041672012-09-25T10:15:00.002-04:002013-01-29T23:41:47.923-05:00Blog: She's alive!<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MrgV8ucO39U/UGG8FMffTAI/AAAAAAAAARY/KlXwM85guIU/s1600/536114_10151083431528090_628105444_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MrgV8ucO39U/UGG8FMffTAI/AAAAAAAAARY/KlXwM85guIU/s320/536114_10151083431528090_628105444_n.jpg" width="320" /></a>Yup, I'm still hanging in there. Sure, I experience sleep deprivation torture the like of Guantanamo Bay, but I've got two adorable little faces (and the occasional glass of sangria) to pull me back from the brink of insanity. So here's what's been going down in the Rockland Mother household...<br />
<br />
Liam is 4.5 months old and in the 91st percentile for height and weight! He's a giant bundle of pumpkin-headed love who doesn't like to sleep, but makes up for it with loads of smiles and his new habit of making fart noises with his mouth.<br />
<br />
Andrew is going to be three in January! He started going to school two days a week this month and he loves it so much he doesn't want to come home at the end of the day. I'm so glad he isn't afraid to go, but its of course bittersweet to see my little boy growing up so quickly! Also, I'm just a little bit embarrassed when he kicks and screams when I pick him up (I promise, folks, he gets more than enough love, food and toys at home!!) <br />
<br />
My husband (have I ever talked to you about him? Whoops.) is working his butt off every day and, while we don't see him as much as I'd like to, he's saving up so that we can buy a house. We've been looking around for said house, but man is it rough out here in Rockland. The houses are still expensive, and we're just afraid to become so house poor that we can't take the boys out to do fun things. We're gonna have to bite the bullet some day, though, no matter how much I do love having my parents upstairs to help us... stressful!<br />
<br />
And, me? I'm still trying to get into a groove with the two little ones and lose the baby weight! I'm on Weight Watchers (again) and trying to find time and the drive for exercise. I really should start posting updates for accountability on the blog, but do you guys really want to see me fail so miserably? Egh, maybe you'll kick me in the (extra-padded) butt and help me slim down for my best friend's April wedding? Do I have to beg you??<br />

Well, until next time!Lisa at Rockland Motherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11184108376837819012noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5943445384848979103.post-17653016137534816342012-06-09T13:24:00.000-04:002013-01-29T23:48:01.696-05:00Blog: Welcome Liam!<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZUuS-8-LcOQ/T9OD0ig_MaI/AAAAAAAAARE/TcoF_atRPb0/s1600/013.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; display: inline !important; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZUuS-8-LcOQ/T9OD0ig_MaI/AAAAAAAAARE/TcoF_atRPb0/s320/013.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Brand-spanking new!</td></tr></tbody></table>So, you may have noticed that I've been absent from blogging for quite awhile and it is because of a totally wonderful reason--Liam has arrived! Our second little boy was born on May 3rd and weighed in at 7 lbs 6 oz and 20 in. He is adorable and we are slowly but surely getting into the groove of being a new family of four.<br />
<br />
I'll be posting more often now that Liam is over a month old and hanging out in his baby seat awhile more now (and not always eating or in my arms!) I've got reviews of Good Samaritan Hospital in mind, a review of my double stroller--the Joovy Ergo Caboose--and a whole lot more... because being a mommy of two is a whole lot different and requires more accouterments!<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; text-align: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5KiBh-Mx76Q/T9OEAuiuFhI/AAAAAAAAARM/duvkh_2nh5M/s1600/091.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5KiBh-Mx76Q/T9OEAuiuFhI/AAAAAAAAARM/duvkh_2nh5M/s320/091.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">1 month old and super cute!</td></tr></tbody></table>Oh, and since nobody but my lovely blogger friend Sara over at <a href="http://www.ninjapanza.com/">NinjaPanza</a> entered the baby guessing game, she's the lucky winner of 3 handmade soaps from <a href="http://craftoland.com/soaps.html?Itemid=">Craft-o-Land</a>! She is a wonderful mommy and deserves this special gift so I won't berate you all for not participating in my little game. (But next time you are all in trouble.) I'll be in touch soon, Sara!Lisa at Rockland Motherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11184108376837819012noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5943445384848979103.post-65118951557234840832012-04-23T20:35:00.000-04:002012-04-23T20:35:43.027-04:00Fail: Lamaze Cotton Spandex Sleep Bra<a href="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61Wn6f5slSL._SL1008_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" class="fullScreen" height="320" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61Wn6f5slSL._SL1008_.jpg" style="margin-top: 10px;" width="227" /></a>I think many pregnant women get to a point where sleeping without a sleep bra or some other sort of support is way too uncomfortable. Having my increasingly larger and more sensitive parts unrestrained while I sleep definitely has become intolerable for me--but its so dang hard to find a well-designed maternity/nursing sleep bra for larger busts (D+)!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002K6F79Q/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i02">Lamaze's Cotton Spandex Sleep Bra</a> ($18) is definitely not the solution to my problem. While it is soft and comfortable and supportive enough while sitting upright, sleeping in the bra is a whole different situation.<br />
<br />
The deep v-neck crossover design--which is designed to make for easy nursing--actually makes is such that when you lay in bed your boobs simply fall out one side or another. Aggravating! Now, if you have super perky boobs (real or constructed) that stay put no matter what, I assume you won't have a problem. But, this mama is just not that lucky.<br />
<br />
I've run into this problem before, though, with crossover/wrap-style sleep bras. The only solution, perhaps, for women with larger busts like me is to go for a different style of sleep support and maybe sew up the v-neck opening of your wrap-style bras so they don't go to waste.<br />
<br />
My favorite sleep solution so far has to be <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Bravado-Essential-Nursing-Tank-Black/dp/B000HAQ69C/ref=sr_1_1?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1335227011&sr=1-1">Bravado's Essential Nursing Tank</a>. No, its not a bra, and it can run up to $60 depending on the size and color you want/need, but your boobs aren't going anywhere in this baby thanks to the comfy built-in wireless bra and the adjustable shoulder straps. If you're lucky, you can find the tanks for sale on discount sites like Zulily or Baby Steals, and Amazon has some of the less popular colors on sale for lower prices.<br />
<br />
I'll most likely be living in my Bravado Nursing Tanks once the baby arrives in the next couple of weeks, but I will still be on the hunt for good sleep bras and nursing bras that I can wear outside the house. Please feel free to post your suggestions below!Lisa at Rockland Motherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11184108376837819012noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5943445384848979103.post-41461576537019727482012-04-20T22:35:00.004-04:002012-04-20T22:37:14.646-04:00One(ish) Week to Go!<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Hello, I am huge -- and my husband has way<br />
too many toiletries. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Yes, I'm still around my friends, even though my blog has been sorely neglected! Getting our home in order has been no easy task these last few weeks--especially since my darling Andrew has discovered the world of "no" where clothes and cooperation are frowned upon!<br />
<br />
Regardless, I've been slowly but surely getting things accomplished and making sure I'm prepared with baby supplies for little one number two due to make his appearance in the next week or two. I'm actually feeling pretty calm right now--a feeling I'm sure will be shattered once little Liam arrives and the tornado that is two little boys consumes me!<br />
<br />
I'm super excited and ready, though, for Liam to be born. My belly is stretched to the max, the lower half of my body feels like it is detaching, my heartburn is at an all-time high, and I can't wait to regain the power to outrun Andrew again! But, mostly, I just can't wait to kiss my sweet new baby and have Andrew meet his (hopefully) future best friend.<br />
<br />
I've also got some really great products I can't wait to try out and report back to you! I was able to sell the too-small Valco Ion double stroller and get an amazing <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Joovy-Caboose-Tandem-Stroller-Black/dp/B0043YVTPY/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1334975357&sr=1-1">Joovy Ergo Caboose</a> (it fits Andrew perfectly and he thinks it is so cool!) I bought a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Snuggin-Go-Infant-Positioner-Green/dp/B003SX0B8M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334975190&sr=8-1">Snuggin Go Infant Positioner</a> to replace our lost infant insert for our Chicco KeyFit 30 car seat. And we just set up our new <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Arms-Reach-Mini-Co-Sleeper-Bassinet/dp/B000HKY1GM/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1334975385&sr=1-1">Arms Reach Co-Sleeper mini bassinet</a>.<br />
<br />
Please send labor dust my way, bloggerverse, and lots of sleep-through-the-night wishes for me and my two little boys! I'll be sure to post more frequently if I can get Andrew and Liam to agree to a reasonable sleep schedule! :)Lisa at Rockland Motherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11184108376837819012noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5943445384848979103.post-31016952275370453152012-03-27T23:00:00.000-04:002012-03-27T23:00:41.577-04:00Review: Valco Baby Ion Ex 4 Two Double StrollerI managed to find a great half-price deal on a new <a href="http://www.valcobaby.com/products/strollers/model/ion-ex-4-two.html">Valco Baby Ion Ex 4 Two</a> via e-bay about four months ago, so I snatched the stroller up before trying it out in a store. I really liked it the minute it arrived, but as Andrew got bigger, I knew it wasn't going to work for us.<br />
<br />
So... I resold the stroller (for a $30 loss!). But, in the meanwhile, I was able to write up a review of it for you. Voila!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KlTPClY5218/T3J4Mhn1egI/AAAAAAAAAQ0/GDrOeSsxfKI/s1600/photo2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KlTPClY5218/T3J4Mhn1egI/AAAAAAAAAQ0/GDrOeSsxfKI/s320/photo2.JPG" width="240" /></a><b><u>Pros:</u> </b><br />
My first impression of the side-by-side Ion Ex 4 Two was that it was an awesome stroller. Its egg-shaped chassis is very sleek-looking, toddler-climbing strong, and slim enough to fit through most standard-sized doorways. It handles like a dream, even with one-handed steering, and I really liked the multi-position-adjustable handlebar. I also loved that there was no way that I could kick the back axle of the stroller without taking an abnormal lunging step (I'm 5'4'').<br />
<br />
The sun-canopy offers excellent coverage (very much like the City Mini) via a zip-out extension and has a nice-sized mesh child-viewing window. And, the under-seat storage basket is very large and easily accessible. There are also two hanging, compartmentalized storage bags on the back of each seat, one of which is detachable and can be used as a small portable hand-held diaper bag. <br />
<br />

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="http://www.valcobaby.com/uploads/tx_productcatalog/Husssh_Inside_Shot.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="200" id="holder" name="holder" src="http://www.valcobaby.com/uploads/tx_productcatalog/Husssh_Inside_Shot.png" width="160" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Valco Baby Bassinet, $100-ouch!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Also convenient is that each of the seats can recline to almost flat quite easily and independently of each other. The seat backs are nice and supportive too, unlike our 2010 City Mini single stroller in which Andrew slumps even after buying an extra back support board. Valco sells adapters for some car seats as well as a bassinet, which is great, and belly bars come standard with the stroller (no extra fee!) Plus, folding the stroller is a breeze--just twist the knob on top and lift a safety latch and the stroller folds inward so that the seat fabric is not exposed to the elements.<br />
<br />
<b><u>Cons:</u></b><br />
The stroller is typically $500 and the accessories aren't cheap either. The bassinet runs around $100 and the car seat adapter is $40 (a better bargain, I think, if you can find the adapter compatible with your seat.) There isn't a built-in cup holder for you or your little one either--unless you'd like to purchase an accessory, of course!<br />
<br />
It takes a bit of practice learning how to adjust and unbuckle the five-point harness, but I guess this is so that little geniuses don't figure how to get out. Also, while the fold is easy to figure out and accomplish, it isn't a self-locking fold and it isn't a very flat fold either.<br />
<br />
Additionally, while the stroller is super easy to assemble, I had no idea how to attach the upper portion of the storage basket for which there were no assembly instructions. I contacted Valco Baby and they sent me an instructional video and some photos to help me out with the installation, but it was still a pain to do (email me if you'd like a link to the Valco materials.)<br />
<br />
Finally--and my reason for returning the stroller--because of its sleek and slender design, larger toddlers are not going to fit into this double stroller for long. Andrew was not even two when I got the stroller, but being 3 feet-ish tall, the fabric from the canopy and curved headrest of the stroller seat hit him on the head. The seat width is also slimmer than other doubles and I could tell my 35-pounder would outgrow it soon. Not to mention that adding a car seat adapter would have taken up more of his space.<br />
<br />
<b><u>The bottom line:</u></b><br />
This is a really great stroller if you have smaller children, but there are other strollers out there that would be better for the longer/heavier haul. I'm looking into purchasing a <a href="http://www.joovy.com/p-27-ergo-caboose.aspx">Joovy Ergo Caboose</a>, which transforms from a double stroller with a car seat adapter to a sit-n-stand. As always, I will be sure to report back here. Until then...Lisa at Rockland Motherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11184108376837819012noreply@blogger.com6
